History

For a long time, itinerant merchants gathered on the square where the Central Market stands today. It wasn’t until 1839 that things became official.

In 1839, the city of Valencia inaugurated a new open-air market: the Mercado Nuevo (“New Market” in Spanish).

However, this market was too small and couldn’t meet the needs of the entire city. That’s why the Valencia city council organized a competition for the reconstruction of the market. It took two competitions for a project to be accepted.

In 1910, Francisco Guardia Vial and Alejandro Soler March presented a project that the city council accepted without hesitation. Since then, the Central Market has been one of the many symbols of Valencia, where you can buy all kinds of food at the numerous stalls.
